KATHARINA JOSAPHINE KNIGHT Katharina Josaphine Knight, 74, of Petersburg, Va., died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at her home. She was born in Kalsdorf, Rumania, the daughter of William and Josaphine Preiss. Along with a brother, sister and their mother, she survived being in a German prison camp during World War II. After their release, the family moved to Hevchlina, Germany, to live. She trained to be a nurse, and it was there she met and later married Olen C. Knight. After being discharged from the U.S. Army, they resided at Pleasant Hill for a while Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Olen C. Knight of 1813 Brandon Ave., Petersburg, VA 23805, originally from Calhoun County; one former daughter-in-law, Ruth, and two grandchildren, Laura and Brian Knight, all of Petersburg; one chosen son, Lee Akers and wife April; one son, Aaron of Richmond, Va.; and several brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews in the Calhoun area. She was preceded in death by one son, William V. Knight. Memorial service was held in Petersburg. MYRTLE JARVIS HAUGHT Myrtle Jarvis Haught, 88, of Raleigh, N.C., died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Brighton Gardens Special Care Unit, Raleigh. She was born and raised in Grantsville. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Clarksburg, was an active member at Clarksburg Country Club and Oral Lake Fishing Club, and served as an auxiliary volunteer at UHC for several years. Surviving are two daughters, Josephine Nerhood and Melissa Stanley, both of Raleigh; four grandchildren; two great-grand-children; three sisters, Una Jarvis of Clarksburg, Lois Davis of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Ola Stalfort of Grantsville; and nine nieces and nephews, Robert F. Riggs, William L. Fouse, Claude A. Fouse, Joseph L. Jarvis, Richard L. Jarvis, Alan W. Davis, Barbara Halles, Robin Canapp, and John Jarvis Stalfort. Zion, died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2007, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center. She was born at Cremo, the daughter of the late Lon Husk and the late Bertha Starcher. She was a homemaker and a former employee of Sav-A-Tool, Grantsville. She had attended Cremo Community Church. Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Holly D. She was a past worthy matron of Order of Eastern Star No. 73, 1987 Calhoun County Belle, Senior Citizens board member and retired from B.F. Goodrich. Burial was in Saunders Cemetery, Big Springs. CAROL LYNN LYONS Carol Lynn Lyons, 40, died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007, in Cleveland, Ohio. She was the daughter of Carol Cozart and the late Roy Lyons. Surviving in addition to her mother are one son, Andrew Lyons; her step-father, Gene Cozart; grandmother, Letha Lane; and step-grandfather, Kenneth Lane; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Services were held at Ellyson Mortuary, Glenville, with Rev. Kevin Church officiating. Burial was in Hunt Cemetery. DR. HUNTER PELL McCARTNEY Dr. Hunter Pell McCartney, 83, died Monday, Mar. 5, 2007. He was born at Index, the 15th child of 19 fathered by Sylvanus Armstrong McCartney and the eighth of 12 born to Sylvanus and Alice Goff McCartney. He attended a one-room school in Gilmer County and graduated from Tanner High School. After attending Glenville State College for one year, he earned his AB from West Virginia University and his MA and PhD degrees from University of Pennsylvania. He was a school teacher and former employee of General Electric, Burroughs, and IBM. He was a former combat infantryman with the 36th Armored Infantry Regiment of the Third Armored Division during World War II and was involved in five military campaigns in the Euro-pean Theater of Operations: Normandy, Northern France, Central Europe, Ardennes (Bulge), and Ruhr Valley. He was discharged as a sergeant and was later commissioned in the U.S. Army Reserve and discharged as a captain. A professor of journalism at West Virginia University for 22 years, he was head of the Public Relations Dept. until retiring in 1989, and was active in national public relations and journalism organizations, holding offices and contributing to professional journals. He was twice named outstanding educator in Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism. An elder and trustee of First Presbyterian Church, Morgan-town, he was a past board member of the local Red Cross chapter, Monongalia County Historical Society, Shack Neighborhood House, and Meals On Wheels program, where he was a volunteer driver for many years. He was a past member of Tau Kappa Epsilon social fraternity, and BPOE, and a member of Morgan-town Rotary Club, where he was a multiple Paul Harris Fellow. In 1950, he married Diane Ferry, who died of cancer in 1996, after 46 years of marriage. They had four children, Deborah and James, both of Morgantown, Nancy of Raleigh, N.C., and Alice of Greensboro, N.C.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson. In 1998, he married Betty Pingley Crickard of Morgantown, who is the mother of Jennifer Crickard Tschetter and one granddaughter of Brookings, S.D. Also surviving are two sisters, Myrtle Roberts of Stumptown and Margaret Kent of Machipongo, Va., and two brothers, Sull McCartney of Glenville and Donald McCartney of Stumptown. She was born in Ritchie County, the daughter of Floyd and Leona Bell Jones. She was a homemaker and housewife. Pisgah Baptist Church, Stumptown. He was a member of Gospel Tones Quartet, W.Va. Baptist Goldeneer’s, Gilmer County Farm Bureau, Gilmer County Senior Center, 1st president of Normantown High School Alumni Association, 4-H leader, active in Little League program, and served 21 years on the Gilmer County ambulance board. Surviving are his wife, Wilda Moore Kuhl, whom he married Aug. 13, 1950; two sons, Michael of Weston and Kenneth of Texas; one daughter, Faye Chambers; seven grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and special relatives, Chester Sholes and Richard Turner. He was born in Revere, the son of the late Hoy C. and Pauline Grogg Nicholas. He graduated from Tanner High School and attended Glenville State College. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War from 1953-1955. He was an instructor for W.Va. Baptist Convention School of Christian Studies, served on its executive board and chaired the committee on ministerial standing. He was moderator of Little Kanawha Baptist Association and chaired the committee on evangelism. He was senior pastor of First Baptist Church, Glenville, and his ministry in Ohio and West Virginia spanned 43 years, during which time, he served as associate pastor of Blackhorse Baptist Church, Ravenna, Ohio, pastor of Chestnut Street Baptist Church, Wadsworth, Ohio, New England Baptist Church, Bethlehem Baptist Church, Enon Baptist Church, Sand Fork Baptist Church, Burnsville Baptist Church, and First Baptist Church, Grantsville, and interim pastor at First Baptist Church, Weston, and Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Mineral Wells. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Eleanor Bell Nicholas; four sons, Robert H. Nicholas II and Kenton Andrew Nicholas, both of Glenville, Eric Warren Nicholas of Cox’s Mill and James E. Moore of Cedarville; two sisters, Betty Jo Roberts of Kent, Ohio, and Wilma Weaver of Parkersburg; one brother, Roger D. FREDERICK HATHAWAY Frederick H. Hathaway, M.D., 91, of Lincoln, Nebraska, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006. He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late Frederick S. and Eva Dye Hathaway. He was a Captain in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and received the Army Commendation Medal. He graduated from West Virginia University and received his medical degree from University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1939. He was in the practice of internal medicine in Lincoln from 1946-87. He was with Veterans Affairs Adjudication Division since 1988. He was a member and officer of numerous medical associations, Trinity United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 3. DONNIE FORREST WALDECK Donnie Forrest Wilson Waldeck, died Monday, July 24, 2006, on her 90th birthday, in Aiken, S.C. She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Bessie and George Spence Wilson. She was active in Broadway Baptist Church, Parkersburg, where she served on the deacon board and was active in Ladies Aid Society and social committee. Surviving are one brother, Rolley J. Wilson of Parkersburg; three sisters, Bessie Ledsome of Reedy, Mary Starkey of Parkers-burg and Osa Fowler of Grantsville; two daughters, Judith W. Hammond and Mary Ann Troy, both of Aiken; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services were held at Broadway Baptist Church with Pastor Dwane Porter officiating. Burial was in Sandridge Cemetery. ETHEL MARIE DUNCAN Ethel Marie Duncan, 90, of Elkins, died Friday, July 21, 2006, in Nella’s Nursing Home, Elkins. She was born in Clay County, the daughter of the late D.R. and Ocie Buckbee Elswick. She was a homemaker. Surviving are two daughters, Lena M. Moneypenny of Rock Hill, S.C., and Luie Griffith of Spencer; three sons, Ottie Duncan of Arnoldsburg, Charles Duncan of Spencer and George Duncan of Gandeeville; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andy O. Duncan; one daughter, Cora Ann Duncan; and one son, Andy O. Duncan, Jr. Services were held at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Larry Jones officiating. Burial was in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Harmony. CHARLES ROWEN FITZWATER Charles Rowen Fitzwater, 78, of Anderson, Ohio, died Sunday, July 9, 2006, at St. John’s Medical Center. He was born in Clay County, the son of the late Ruby Lamb Finley and Otmer Fitzwater. He was employed at Brockway Glass for 10 years and Hobart Welding of Troy, Ohio, for 25 years before retiring in 1993. He was a member of White Oaks Baptist Church. He was a corporal in the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War. Surviving are one son, Larry Fitzwater of Piqua, Ohio; one daughter, Carol Montanez of Piqua; two sisters, Vada Sharpe of Anderson and Joann Chapman of Daleville; one brother, Johnie Fitzwater of Texas; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; aunts and uncles, Maysel and Verne Snyder of Scottsdale, Ariz., Losie Dye of Cleveland, Ohio (formerly of Chloe), and James and Madge Lamb of St. Albans; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his step-father, John Finley; one sister, Hazel Finley; one infant brother, Elden Fitzwater; and one infant sister, Janice Fitzwater. JEFFREY ARLAN STEWART Jeffrey Arlan Stewart, 52, of Lockney, died Thursday, July 20, 2006, while vacationing in Florida. He was the son of the late Herbert Arlan Stewart and Mary Collins Stewart. For the past six years, he was employed by Braxton County Board of Education as a bus driver. He also did taxidermy work. Surviving are his wife, Deborah Meadows Stewart, whom he married Sept. 11, 1974; three sons, Christopher Stewart of Lockney and Scott and Keith Stewart, both at home; one daughter, Mary Beth Sauer of Shock; one grandson; and three step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, James Howard Stewart. WILMA REBECCA ROACH Wilma Rebecca Howell Roach, 92, of Pleasant Hill, died Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. She was born in Preston County, the daughter of the late David Alison and Louisa Jane Martin Harned. She was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church and was a homemaker. Surviving are two sons, Drexal Howell of Morgantown and David Howell of Vienna; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grand-children. NORA NICHOLAS Nora B. Nicholas, 66, of Lockney, died Wednesday, July 12, 2006, in Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center. She was born in Lockney, the daughter of the late Charles O. and Dorothy May Hopkins. She was a private caretaker to elderly people in Calhoun and Gilmer counties. She had previously worked at SunBridge of Glenville. Surviving are two daughters, Donna Brady of Caldwell and Pam Meadows of Lockney; two sons, Kenneth Schoolcraft of Glenville and Christopher Carafelli of Lockney; one step-sister, Shirley Barnhart of Massillon, Ohio; two step-brothers, Robert and Kenneth Brown, both of Massillon; five grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. BRUCE McCUNE Bruce McCune, 89, of Orma, died Thursday, July 13, 2006. He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Peter M. and Willa Bourne McCune. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in the South Pacific. He was a former oil field worker and carpenter. He and his brother, Norville, were the subject of a feature article in “Wild Wonderful West Virginia” magazine. Surviving are one brother, Norville McCune of Orma, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Dowe, Vance and Ralph McCune, and one sister, Stacy Allen. Graveside rites were held at Orma United Methodist Church Cemetery. THELMA STEMPLE BELL Thelma Stemple Bell, 91, of Spencer, died Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at Roane General Hospital. She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Ray and Mittie Barnes Stemple. She was retired from Traders Bank, Spencer, and was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, Spencer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil M. Bell, in 1960, and one brother, Andrew Stemple. Graveside services were held at Eventide Cemetery, Spencer, with Rev. Leon Strickland officiating. LAURA GERALDINE KELLEY Laura Geraldine Kelley, 87, of Grantsville, died Friday, July 14, 2006, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center’s long term care. She was born at White Pine, the daughter of the late Francis and Della Grimm Kelley. She worked in Akron, Ohio, during World War II, and was a beautician for many years in Grantsville. She was a member of Cherry Fork Church, Surviving are one sister, Frances Jean Yoak Miller of Grantsville; one brother, Donald Kelley of Grantsville; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Carolina Barr, Gladys Whipkey and Genevieve Ward, and two brothers, Virgil Kelley and Blenden Kelley. She was the daughter of the late Okie and Nancy McCune Hall. JESSIE SINGLETON MAXWELL Jessie Singleton Maxwell, 95, died Thursday, July 13, 2006, at Shenandoah Nursing Home, Fishersville, Va. She was born in Gem, Braxton County, the daughter of the late French and Effie Bosley Singleton. She worked for American Rayon Viscoe Co., Parkersburg, for several years.
