Soundex encoding is a method that was developed by Robert Russell and Margaret Odell in the early 1900's. The phonetic algorithm developed by Russell and Odell was modified in the 1930 to analyze the United States Census for the years of 1890 through 1920. This modification is refereed to as the American variation In the 1960's, as the use of computers was growing in universities, business and the scientific communities, the use of the Soundex encoding became widely accepted.
